Owning a farm is rare for a coffee brand. Most buy through traders who buy through exporters who buy through washing stations. We skipped all of that.

240 hectares in Mizan, Ethiopia. Ours. And Binyam is one of the managers who runs it - years on the ground with us, from seedling to cherry.

Every sip counts, because someone we know grew it.

MEET FELIX

Almost all African coffee leaves the continent raw and gets roasted in Europe. That's where the money is made. So we moved the roastery.

Felix is our head roaster in Kenya. He takes the beans from a few hours away and roasts them right there - the value, the skill and the jobs staying where the coffee grew.

That's what roasting at origin actually looks like.

Laarzen tot diep in de modder, groene vingers, bomen planten en scholen bouwen: dat is wat wij bedoelen met ‘boots-on-the-ground’ Wij zijn geen anoniem koffiebedrijf, maar staan midden in de realiteit van onze boeren. Omdat we een deel van de velden waar koffie groeit zelf beheren én rechtstreeks samenwerken met koffiegemeenschappen in heel Oost-Afrika, weten we precies met wie we werken. We kennen hun namen, hun gezinnen, hun dromen, maar ook hun uitdagingen. Daardoor begrijpen we beter wat er écht nodig is om vooruitgang te boeken. In plaats van onze ogen te sluiten en te verschuilen achter derden, pakt FairChain de problemen direct bij de wortel aan.

Dirty hands, muddy boots, farming, planting, building schools – we are a boots-on-the-ground coffee company. Because we work directly with coffee communities across East Africa, we know their names and we know their needs. Poverty is the red thread that connects them, but solutions differ from one community to the next. Some need new saplings or more income through agroforestry, others desperately desire new schools and daycare. Rather than play dumb and hide behind third-party partnerships, FairChain tackles the challenges hands-on and head on.

FairChain is not a charity but a viable business model designed to leave more added value in the communities that grow our coffee. By roasting at origin, paying farmers living incomes and protecting their forests (and massively planting new ones), we have created a FairChain blueprint and invite others to follow. There’s only one huge downside to FairChain Coffee: brands like us earn less profit. Which is the reason Big Coffee multinationals and typical venture capitalists dislike us very much. It took us 12 years trying and failing and trying again, but now we can confidently say that FairChain is a very real blueprint for the future of coffee.
