WHAT IS THE CHALLENGE?

The problem with coffee is that 90% of what coffee is worth, goes to a handful of large multinationals, which we call Big Coffee, labels we all know. This means that only 10% of the value of coffee stays within the country of origin. That leaves the Farmer with no possibility for development or margin! With us this is 50%, because we roast and package in country of origin we redistribute the coffee chain toward an equal partnership.

“GROWING COUNTRIES LIKE ETHIOPIA SHOULD BE EQUAL PARTNERS. IT’S THEIR COFFEE, AFTER ALL!”

Guido van Staveren van Dijk, founder of Moyee Coffee

Factories

ECONOMIC IMPACT

By roasting in countries of origin, Moyee is helping coffee growing countries to reclaim their rightful position as equal partners in the global coffee chain. Roasting in countries of origin de-colonizes the supply chain, creates valuable jobs, give the youth a proud future independent of development aid and bring in the much-needed forex. Our FairChain model leaves 50 instead of, the industry average, 10% of total value.

The first roastery we started in Ethiopia, then expanded to Kenya and now have collaborations in Colombia.

Farmers

SOCIAL IMPACT

Profitable farms, earning farmers a living income. Millions of coffee farmers however, live below poverty levels. Only in Ethiopia there are, 900k farmers fighting for their existence. This while a handful of BigCoffee Oligarchs earn colossal profits. A living income is not the outcome of a well-intended do-goodnick impact program but a human right and thus Moyee pioneered with numerous interventions and put a living income in the centre of its business model.

Forests

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

Poverty causes deforestation. Moyee reverses that trend by planting coffee plants and giving them back to farmers to grow coffee in a biodiverse environment. This not only protects forests but also brings farmers closer to a living income.

How do we do it?

Roasting and packaging takes place in Ethiopia and Kenya, we sell the coffee and the value is neatly shared. A sustainable and fair collaboration between producers and consumers. By moving these value adding activities in the coffee chain we make sure we can have a positive and radical impact on millions of people.

But!!! We don’t roast everything in our country of origin. Why?

– We work from the market and only when a flavor has enough volume can we move it. For example, we took a giant leap by moving our Dutch-developed Triple to Kenya.

– We have the shortest chain. Between the farmer and the cup are just us. But yes a container may take longer to arrive or be stuck. Then we roast in the Netherlands to ensure that everyone can continue to enjoy our radically delicious coffee.

In our original plan we thought we could burn a maximum of 70% in country of origin, but last year we ended up with 84% Yesss!

The packaging contains roast and packed in country of Origin. So that’s a small % not quite right, but we don’t know how else to do it without all kinds of extra hassles with multiple types of labels. And since we are 100% transparent and also mention the FairChain % in our impact report and on the website we think you will find that okay. If not let us know!
