Rip, Drip & Sip
Moyee FairChain and FreshDrip
Join Forces
Moyee FairChain Coffee, the independent Dutch coffee brand based in Amsterdam and Nairobi, has added FreshDrip, Europe’s leading brand for drip bag coffee, to its expanding impact coffee portfolio. The purchase of FreshDrip bolsters Moyee’s push into the growing drip bag coffee and office coffee markets.
Going forward, Moyee will take over the production and operations of FreshDrip — and centralise strategy and production initially in Nairobi, alongside Moyee’s own operations in Ethiopia and Uganda. Meanwhile, FreshDrip founder Alex Kitain will focus entirely on expanding FreshDrip throughout Europe and growing FreshDrip’s market presence in Europe B2B.
“We recently installed a state-of-the-art instant clip drip bag machine at our Nairobi roastery. This allows us to produce FreshDrip locally, in origin. It fits Moyee’s model perfectly: radical quality and radical impact,” explains Guido van Staveren, founder of Moyee. “We’re proud to strengthen our impact ecosystem with this acquisition. Alex has built a kickass brand, and we’re happy to help it scale across Europe while continuing to serve FreshDrip’s B2B clients.”
“The partnership with Moyee is a huge win,” adds Alex Kitain. “Moyee already has serious production capacity and a serious impact strategy — and has a clear B2B roadmap, from remote working solutions to full-service coffee corners for the office.”
The FreshDrip brand will remain as is, but from now on produced in origin. Kisimi was already active in the specialty coffee world with The Coffeevine — an online coffee subscription service. The business introduced his independent readers to international roasters, such as Onyx and Muttley & Jack, and helped spotlight some of the most exciting new coffees from around the world.
In 2017, Kisimi discovered drip bag coffee during travels through Japan and South Korea.
“These small, portable single-portion bags were everywhere in hotels, offices, even specialty coffee shops in Asia. The packaging was so clever, the usability so good, I had the concept back to Europe immediately.”
Drip coffee bags have become more and more common in Europe in recent years — not primarily as a cheap convenience, but as a specialty coffee solution for on-the-go moments.
FreshDrip, as an EU brand, focused especially on the mass market, with listings at Albert Heijn and Ekoplaza. Now, with Moyee’s support, FreshDrip can reach a wider array of customers.
Moyee also noticed a growing demand for Nespresso alternatives in office setups. In particular in new hybrid work environments, where a mix of employees and freelancers requires high-quality coffee that doesn’t take barista skills or machines.
“As we still see a lot of heavy Nespresso use in offices, we feel FreshDrip is the better way forward,” says Roos (NL Sales Manager) at Moyee. “No capsules, no waste, better quality. The simplicity of tea bags, but filled with radically good coffee. Perfect for offices that want to offer longer quality breaks without the mess. We’ve already started campaigning with FreshDrip in big Dutch offices, in partnership with players like Coffee Work, Toxtown en Nad’s Palmeraie — and it’s a success.”
To Europe and beyond!
This partnership deal frees up Kisimi to focus on FreshDrip-branded growth in Europe, while bringing his expertise, packaging know-how and B2B playbook to Moyee. By acquiring FreshDrip, Moyee becomes a European producer and distributor of FreshDrip-style formats — combining FreshDrip’s EU brand, an independent brand identity, with Moyee’s radical impact model and coffee from origin. A good business + radical coffee + fresh workflow solutions = bound to be brewed up.
“I’ve known Guido for over 10 years and admire how he is disrupting coffee at origin. I’m super happy to be partnering with him,” says Kisimi. “We’re both obsessed with improving impact in the coffee world. It makes sense that two democratising businesses join forces.”
FreshDrip also brings a more flexible offering, which is often already present in offices.
The market is evolving rapidly, interest is growing. There is no shortage of ideas. We can’t wait to build B2B and consumer options from here.
FreshDrip’s simple brewing coffee experience can already be found at the Social Hub, OGD and Urban Lodge, among others. The product is available in Colombia, Uganda, Ethiopia and El Salvador. The blend and origin-specific versions include washed Ethiopian, natural Uganda, and limited edition collaborations — all with 10g of freshly ground beans per FreshDrip bag. No 3-in-1 nonsense.
