Tess, our Barista Champion Extraordinaire

Meet Tess: part of our Fairchain Kenya coffee source and quality team
and barista champion!

Something that might surprise you: we have an actual Barista Champion on our team!
Tess, our ’22 East-African Barista Champion and FairChain Kenya are joining forces during her prep for round two: the 2023 Kenya National Barista Championship. Both Moyee and FairChain are supporting Tess’ preparation for battle, full steam ahead!

At only 27 years old, Tess already has an impressive six years of experience in the coffee industry. Her story starts with the stereotypical ‘initially-disgusted-by-coffee face’ after she took her very first sip of coffee. Tess became immediately intrigued: this strange drink tasted horribly to her, but at the same time it was loved by people around the world! She studied coffee and its many facets, and slowly but surely developed a true passion for the beverage.

"I embarked on an extensive research journey to understand why coffee is so beloved by millions worldwide. This exploration soon turned into a deep passion that has consumed me to this day."

- Esther "Tess" Atieno, Business Developer & HEad barista

Soon, Tess’ knowledge of coffee helped her grow into a certified barista and brewer through the Specialty Coffee Association. Filled with enthusiasm and passion, she decided to sign in for the 2022 Kenya National Barista Championship. Tess expresses her gratitude for her previous employer, coach, and all the other people who supported and believed in her. The end result revealed she is undoubtedly a true coffee expert: she won the championship!

Recently, FairChain Kenya hired Tess as New Business Developer. So far we have focused on expanding our export to Europe, but in Kenya there is also a growing demand for our FairChain coffee. That’s why we’re currently looking at possibilities to supplying the Kenyan market. Tess’ local industry knowledge will help us in this African journey!

"I love to provide valuable insights to enhance the quality of the coffee to meet the customers' expectations and I really enjoy offering guidance and advice to farmers on how to improve their coffee production processes to meet the ever-evolving demands of the coffee industry."

- Esther "Tess" Atieno, Business Developer & HEad barista
On her search to the perfect cup of coffee, Tess explores Kenya’s local coffee market and inspects coffee beans from farms in different regions. As a result, she does not only find her perfect flavour for the championship, but also small treasures that FairChain Kenya uses as ‘limited editions’ in Europe, for you to enjoy! These limited editions are so popular, they often sell out within days.

But first things first: we’re focussing on helping Tess compete for the Champion title in the 2023 Kenyan National Barista Championship. Last year, she won in Kenya and got the chance to compete in Australia. This year she is eager to try if she can reach an even higher world ranking. Her competition is stiff, but she can count on the support of her team!

How are we helping Tess, you might wonder? While we won’t share any secrets, our main task is to join her daily coffee routines and share feedback and ideas. We cheer her on, give her constructive criticism, and share our energy with her. In return, Tess does not only serve us amazing coffees (what a luxury at work!), but also teaches the entire team about coffee. She does this in unique and fun ways, such as by conducting a blind cupping in which the team places their bets on who will win. We’ve also had warehouse employees, who are non-coffee expert, give their own ‘cupping score’, leading to the quirkiest and most original descriptions of coffee!

FairChain Kenya and Moyee Netherlands wish Tess the best of luck during her participation in the championship, and are looking forward to a great continuation of our collaboration in the future!
