THE REPUBLIC: AGROFORESTRY UPDATE

Hey there, fellow change-makers! Today, let's take a deep dive into the heart of our agrofestry mission in Mizan, Ethiopia, where every seed planted represents a step towards a brighter, more sustainable future.

Ethiopia’s coffee heritage runs deep, woven into the fabric of its culture and echoing across time and continents. For generations, coffee cultivation has sustained livelihoods and flavored the stories of communities. But as the global coffee landscape undergoes transformative shifts, driven by climate dynamics and ecological awareness, the call to redesign Ethiopian coffee farming practices echoes with renewed urgency.

We're putting a stop to deforestation THROUGH preservation and planting new TREES

Picture this: the rolling hills of Guraferda transformed into a vibrant tapestry of growth and opportunity. From high-value export commodities to nurturing local markets, every plot of land tells a story of resilience and renewal. As we map out the terrain and design our agroforestry systems, we’re not just planting trees – we’re cultivating hope, prosperity, and a brighter future for our Mizan community.

"In the fertile soils of Southwest Ethiopia, traditional agroforestry stands as a testament to cultural heritage and ecological wisdom. Yet, in the face of mounting land competition and economic pressures, its profitability often wanes. Our mission is clear: to revitalize agroforestry into a viable and competitive business model, where sustainable practices not only preserve the land but also secure livelihoods for generations to come."

- Jake, climate change and biodiversity researcher

Jake is our seasoned FairChain agroecologist with a passion for sustainable farming practices. Alongside him are Massimo and Guillem, two master students from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) eager to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty. Together, this dynamic trio forms the backbone of our agroforestry adventure, armed with knowledge, passion, and a shared commitment to change.

It all began with a thorough site assessment led by Jake, who meticulously studied the terrain, climate, and existing vegetation. His insights laid the groundwork for a sustainable agroforestry system that integrates coffee cultivation with forest conservation. But Jake isn’t alone – he collaborates closely with the local management team, ensuring that the project’s objectives align with the community’s aspirations.

A scenario example from what crops could be planted in Mizan

The decision-making process on what crops to grow is multifaceted, influenced by a myriad of factors ranging from market access to environmental conditions and cultural values. With considerations such as technology, capital availability, and genetic resources also at play, crafting the perfect crop selection strategy becomes a complex endeavor. At Moyee, we recognize the individuality of each farmer’s situation and respect their autonomy in navigating these diverse variables. Our aim is not to prescribe solutions but to offer inspiration, providing glimpses into potential scenarios that farmers may encounter.

These scenarios serve as a starting point in the planning process, offering a framework for exploration rather than definitive blueprints. Through ongoing collaboration and feedback, we aim to co-create sustainable and impactful farming strategies that uplift communities and nurture the land.

We're stimulating biodiversity where we can, this is not only beneficial for our coffee but also provides other sources of food and income

With the groundwork laid, it’s time to bring the FairChain vision to life. Despite facing challenges – including battles with malaria and logistical hurdles – our team sources genetic material crucial for the nursery’s development. From spices like black pepper, cacao, cardamom and vanilla to fruit trees like mango and avocado, every species holds the promise of a vibrant ecosystem teeming with life.

As the nursery takes root, Massimo and Guillem lead the charge on-farm, translating theory into practice with gusto. They build a chicken coop, initiate agroforestry planting, and facilitate the construction of additional housing. Each action is a testament to their dedication, turning dreams of sustainability into tangible, on-ground initiatives.

But our journey isn’t just about creating a thriving ecosystem – it’s about empowering communities and amplifying voices. Through inclusive decision-making and active engagement, we ensure that local wisdom shapes the transformation. It’s about fostering a shared vision that redefines coffee farming within Ethiopia’s social fabric and collective ambitions.

As this initial agroforestry adventure draws to a close, we leave behind a capable local team armed with resources, knowledge, and tools for successful management. The Mizan farm stands as a beacon of hope, a testament to what’s possible when tradition and innovation converge. In the future, the focus will lie on further expanding sustainable farming practices. One of which is getting cows to produce our very own bio-compost!
